Chair of Alice in Wonderland
Ángel Lara V. (Costa Rica)
Located at Paseo Palmeras, Las Catalinas.
Created in 2006 as part of Ángel Lara's Chairs Series, this sculpture transforms an everyday object into an invitation to experience the world from a different perspective.
Inspired by the fantastical universe of Alice in Wonderland, the oversized red chair plays with scale and proportion, creating an unexpected experience for anyone who sits on it. Its imposing dimensions evoke the feeling of being a child again, with feet dangling above the ground and the backrest towering overhead.
The chair holds another surprise: its distinctive design frames the sitter's silhouette from behind, creating the visual illusion of a corset. This playful interaction between the human body and the sculpture adds an unexpected dimension to the work, blending humor, form, and imagination.
Crafted from mild steel and finished in vibrant red enamel, the sculpture invites visitors to do more than simply observe. You are warmly invited to take a seat, experience the chair for yourself, and have someone capture the moment from behind to reveal its surprising corset-like effect.
Through this playful encounter, Lara reminds us that art can transform an ordinary action into an extraordinary experience, inviting us to rediscover the world with curiosity and a sense of wonder.
